A Platform for Targeted Therapeutic Innovation

What is Rhenium-SCT?
Rhenium-SCT (Skin Cancer Therapy) is a non-invasive1,* treatment designed for certain types of non-melanoma skin cancer. The therapy uses a highly targeted radioactive compound applied directly to the skin’s surface over a special film, delivering ß-radiation precisely to the tumour while minimising exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue. Because the treatment is applied externally, it does not require surgery, incisions, or sutures.4
The procedure is typically performed in a single5,† treatment session by trained healthcare professionals. By focusing radiation where it is needed most, Rhenium-SCT aims to effectively treat the cancer while supporting favourable cosmetic outcomes.6,‡
Patients should always consult their doctor to determine whether this treatment option is appropriate for their individual diagnosis.
How does Rhenium-SCT work?
Rhenium-SCT works by delivering highly targeted radiation directly to the skin cancer. During treatment, a paste containing the radioisotope rhenium 188 is applied to the surface of the lesion using a protective foil/film that conforms to the shape of the tumour. The radioisotope emits ß-radiation, which penetrates only a few millimetres into the skin and destroys cancer cells in the treated area while helping to spare the surrounding healthy tissue.4
Because the radiation acts locally and does not travel deeply into the body, the treatment can be delivered externally in a controlled session without surgery. Once the planned treatment time is complete, the protective foil/film is removed and the radiation source is taken away, allowing patients to return to normal activities while the treated skin gradually heals.4
OncoBeta APS Applicator
A specially designed application device which enables the clinician to apply the Rhenium-SCT paste in a homogenic manner to the area needed to treat. It is able to regulate the flow of paste to the brush tip.
The Base Station automatically loads the Carpoule directly into the Applicator, ready for treatment. The Applicator will then be loaded into the Measurement Station to perform the activity measurements before and after treatment.
The applicator is engineered with an optimised size, shape, materials, and integrated shielding to support precise treatment while protecting both the clinician and the patient.
OncoBeta Rhenium-188 Carpoule
The Carpoules contain the rhenium 188 radioisotope bound to a fluid matrix (paste) for application to the area needed to treat. Our manufacturing partners prepare the Rhenium-188 Paste and fill each Carpoule for adequate treatment of 25cm2 total lesion size.
The Carpoules are sealed within a transport unit for delivery to local treatment centres, and need to be activated in the Base Station prior to use.
Each Carpoule features a specially designed brush for precise application. The Carpoules are loaded into the Applicator for safe handling and efficient usage. The Carpoules are a single use item, and should be disposed of after treatment.
Base Station
The Base Station is used to safely load and further process the Transport Unit containing up to five Carpoules of the Rhenium-188 Paste. The Carpoules are placed in 5 defined positions within the Transport Unit. The Base Station is used to load the desired Carpuole into the Applicator. The Base Station also includes a mixing function that allows for the homogenisation mixture of the compound in the selected Carpoule immediately before its application. Furthermore, the integrated shielding module ensures a maximum level of radiation protection.
An arm locking mechanism enables the user to precisely guide the Applicator during the loading process in a predefined user-friendly manner. The Base Station is designed to work alongside the Measurement Station. The activation of the Carpoule is consequently carried out with the Base Station immediately before therapy begins.
Measurement Station
The Measurement Station is a portable dose calibrator equipped with additional shielding to better protect clinicians during the measurement process. It determines the activity of the Carpoule before and after each therapy application.
To do so, the clinician positions the loaded Applicator for connection to the dose calibrator and calculation using the dosimetry spreadsheet. This automatically measures the current activity of the Carpoule. Clinicians may access the data at any time for documentation and printing.
The Measurement Station is designed to work alongside the Base Station, and is crucial for the accurate calculation of treatment time with each patient.

What is the Generator?3
The OncoBeta 188W/188Re Generator is a specialised system used in nuclear medicine to produce the radioisotope rhenium 188 (188Re) when it is needed. Inside the generator, a parent isotope, tungsten 188 (188W), slowly decays to form rhenium 188. This newly formed radioisotope can then be extracted from the generator in a controlled process using a sterile saline solution.
The resulting rhenium 188 solution can be used in the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals or other therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine and oncology. Because the generator continuously produces rhenium 188 from its parent isotope, it provides a reliable on-site source of this high-energy ß-emitting radionuclide for clinical and research use.
OncoBeta’s Generator allows hospitals and nuclear medicine facilities to access the isotope on demand, supporting the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals and therapeutic applications without needing frequent external isotope supply.
The Generator can be used for radiolabelling reactions or directly as a high dose liquid radioactive source. Not for human use.
- Available in different sizes upon request up to 55.5 GBq (1.5 Ci) 188W
- High activity concentration > Up to 9 GBq/ml
- The elution yield of rhenium 188 is 75-85 %, and it remains stable throughout the shelf-life of the generator.
- The 188W/188Re generator must be eluted with sterile 0,9 % saline solution only.
- The maximum time for the 188W/188Re generator to be left uneluted is three (3) weeks.
- Typical 188W/188Re generator elution profile.

* No direct skin contact or incisions.1
† Treatment was generally well tolerated. Adverse events were mostly mild to moderate. Twelve Grade 3/4 events occurred at earlier time points, with none persisting beyond 6 months. The most common 24-month adverse events were hypopigmentation (G1/2: 58%/5%), telangiectasia (G1: 15%), alopecia (G1/2: 10.4%/0.9%) and induration (G1/2: 9.6%/0.9%). No treatment-related adverse events led to study withdrawal.5
‡ No disfiguring scarring. Retained functionality in high-risk and difficult to treat areas.2
