The global incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers has been drastically increasing over the past decades. It is estimated that there are over 5 million non-melanoma skin cancer cases reported globally each year. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Australia with over 500,000 people each year being diagnosed with one or more of these cancers.

Personalized irradiation therapy for NMSC by rhenium-188 skin cancer therapy: a long-term retrospective study

Abstract

Objectives

This study aimed to provide long-term clinical data about an innovative epidermal radioisotope therapy called Rhenium-SCT® (Skin Cancer Therapy) for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), based on the use of the non-sealed beta emitter rhenium-188.

Material and Methods

NMSC patients with a mean age of 71.7 years were treated with rhenium-188 skin cancer therapy between the years 2005 and 2014. An acryl matrix containing rhenium-188 was applied on a plastic foil covering the tumor. The treatment time for reaching a radiation dose of 50 Gy was calculated by a software program. Patients’ characteristicsand clinical follow-up data were collected and retrospectively analyzed.

Results

Overall 55 lesions (32 BCC, 19 SCC, 2 M. Bowen and 2 extramammary Paget’s disease (EMPD)) mainly in the head and neck region (72.3%) were treated. The average size of the irradiation area was 9.79 cm² and the mean treatment time 46.35 minutes. All lesions showed a complete remissionafter a follow-up period between 3 and more than 12 months. No complications or other post-interventional problems were reported.

Conclusions

Rhenium-SCT® is considered as an effective, rapid, safe, painless treatment mostly performed in a single therapeutic session, regardless of the shape complexity, anatomical site and number of lesions.

Beijing, China and Garching near Munich, Germany, Tuesday 30th June 2020. CIRC and OncoBeta today announced that they have signed an agreement for the distribution of high energy beta particle W/Re-188 generators in China.

The OncoBeta® high energy beta particle Tungsten-188/Rhenium-188 (W/Re-188) Generators can be used for radiolabeling reactions or directly as a high dose liquid radioactive source. Rhenium-188 (Re-188) is a high energy-emitting radioisotope obtained from the W/Re-188 Generator. Re-188 has shown a high efficiency and value for a variety of therapeutic applications in the nuclear medicine, oncology, and interventional radiology/cardiology areas. Its advantageous physical properties, its potential low cost, and with a long-lived parent make this generator an attractive option for clinical use. The high energy of the emission of Re-188 is particularly well suited for the effective penetration in solid tumors as well as skin cancers.

How can you Reduce the Risk of Skin Cancer?

Skin Cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world 1. Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation exposure is one of the major causes of melanoma and Non-melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC), such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) 2-3.

UV radiation is emitted naturally from the sun. Some of the sun’s radiation is absorbed by the earth atmosphere and a small part reaches the earth’s surface. A long-term exposure to solar light (UV radiation) can damage the DNA inside your skin. This can cause cells to start growing out of control in the epidermis, leading to the formation of a cluster of abnormal cells called “cancerous cells”4-5. This is the start of skin cancer.

In order to protect the skin from UV radiation, there are widely available products (creams oils, gels, sprays) that when applied over the skin, filter UV rays. These products are known as Sunscreen and are made in a broad range of Sun Protection Factors (SPF). The SPF is a measurement of how much solar energy is required to create sunburn on the protected skin. The number is not related to the time but to the amount of solar exposure, and this depends on the time of the day and the geographic location. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases as well 6. Amount of UVB filtered by the Sunscreen according to SPF Value7

Some studies have shown that the use of sunscreen reduces the incidence of NMSC 8-10. However, the effectiveness of sunscreen in preventing skin cancer depends on different aspects. It depends not only on the SPF and the resulting UV spectral absorption but also on the amount of sunscreen applied to the skin as well as how well the sun-exposed parts of the skin are covered. Reapplication also has a large effect on the efficacy of sunscreen 11.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the amount of sunscreen in the form of cream or oil applied to achieve the corresponding SPF rating should be 2mg (0.4 teaspoons) per cm2 area (circa the area of an average thumb’s nail). In order to achieve full protection, apply the right amount of sunscreen and cover the entire exposed area of skin properly. Also apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of the skin followed by 20-30 min in the shade in order to allow the protective film to regenerate. It is recommended that sunscreen be reapplied every two hours, as well as after swimming, playing and or exercising outdoors, in order to achieve the highest protection of all exposed areas 11.

Houston, TX, USA and OncoBeta GmbH, Garching/, Germany, February 7th, 2020 RadioMedix and OncoBeta today announced the execution of an exclusive distribution agreement for the next generation of W/Re-188 generators in the U.S. and Canada.

The OncoBeta® Tungsten (Wolfram)-188/Rhenium-188 (W/Re-188) Generators can be used for radiolabeling reactions or directly as a high dose liquid radioactive source. Rhenium-188 (Re-188) is a high energy-emitting radioisotope obtained from the W/Re-188 Generator. Re-188 has shown a high efficiency and value for a variety of therapeutic applications in the nuclear medicine, oncology, and interventional radiology/cardiology areas. Its advantageous physical properties, its potential low cost, and with a long-lived parent make this generator an attractive option for clinical use. This agreement represents another milestone in the development of OncoBeta’s growing global distribution network.

Under the terms of the agreement, Tautomer and Nativa will employ its extensive knowledge of African markets, sales and marketing expertise and strong network to introduce, distribute and service the Rhenium-SCT® therapy. The distribution agreement includes all geographies of the African continent starting with South Africa.

About the Rhenium-SCT® (Skin Cancer Therapy)

The Rhenium-SCT® is a non-invasive, painless therapy generally providing for unparalleled aesthetic results, even in cases otherwise considered difficult to treat. The Rhenium-SCT® utilizes the radioisotope Rhenium-188 in an epidermal application with optimal properties for the treatment of NMSCs (non-melanoma skin cancers). Due to the specially designed devices and accessories the Rhenium-SCT® compound never comes in direct contact with the patients’ skin and the application is safe and simple for the applying physician.
